Ottawa Toenail Fungus Removal.

Laser treatment of Onychomycosis is a relatively new solution, but it has already proven to be highly effective, yielding tangible results for even the most stubborn of Nail Fungus Cases. There are no negative side effects like those that can accompany oral medications ( liver damage= regular blood testing). Since the procedure is virtually painless and takes less than 10 minutes for both feet makes Laser treatment of Onychomycosis an ideal solution.

About Nail Fungus

Onychomycosis is the clinical term given to what is more commonly known as toenail fungus. It is an infection of the nail and nail bed that causes yellowing, darkening, and pain underneath the nail. The infection is most often caused by moist environments–lakes, pools, gym locker rooms, and hotel bathrooms.

Patients who suffer from onychomycosis often hide their toes by wearing closed-toed shoes, perpetuating the problem by keeping it in a dark, moist environment. Aside from the uncomfortable symptoms of onychomycosis, there is a social detriment to the infection. The unsightly nature of the infection causes many patients to shy away from activities in which their feet would be otherwise exposed.

Prior to laser technology, the only prescribed treatments were oral medications that are considered low percentage solutions. Oral medications are also known to cause immediate health risks to internal organs that require regular blood testing. Alternative treatments are available, topical creams and home remedies take time, money, and are also largely ineffective.

Ottawa Laser Treatment for Toenail Fungus

For most patients, 2-4 laser treatments are enough to destroy the fungus. You will not see results instantly though, as the nails take a long time to grow out. Within the first 3 months, it will gradually clear and new growth will develop under the existing nail. The toenail typically replaces itself every 6-12 months, though this will vary depending on the individual’s condition.

Side Effects

Studies have shown that laser treatment has no negative side effects, compared to traditional oral antifungals. The beam doesn’t harm the soft, healthy tissue around and underneath the nail bed—it only targets the infected area. For patients, laser treatment produces little or no discomfort, which means the procedure doesn’t call for a local anesthetic.
